Trial phases, explained in plain language
What Phase 1 through Phase 4 generally mean, and why a study label tells you about its stage, not its quality.
Why phases exist
Research usually moves in steps. Each phase answers a different question, starting small and growing as more is learned.
Phase 1 and Phase 2
Early phases tend to involve smaller groups and focus on understanding safety and the right approach. Phase 2 studies grow a little and look more closely at how something works.
Phase 3 and Phase 4
Later phases often include larger groups across many locations. Phase 4 studies may happen after a product is available, to keep learning over time.
What to ask
When you read a listing, ask what the study hopes to learn, how long it lasts, and what a typical visit looks like.
